Since 2011 Flinders University partnered with the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) to pilot e-mentoring. The initial pilot was developed in 2011 with 23 mentoring matches between year 9 students at 3 remote and regional school sites in South Australia and a pool of Flinders University students as mentors. Internal evaluation of this pilot demonstrated highly promising positive outcomes for academic connection, social and emotional well-being and increased connection to learning. The program continued in 2012 and 2013 included mentors from Flinders University, DECD staff applicants and members of the community who were matched with students from school sites across South Australia. e-mentors share skills and experience that reflect age, cultural and social diversity in order to build community connection. e-mentoring enables young people to benefit from mentors guidance and support. Referred students meet once a week for one lesson at a time mutually convenient to school and mentors in the Saba Centra on-line environment. All e-mentoring sessions occur during school hours and are monitored and recorded by e-mentoring staff located at Open Access College. All mentors are screened (CHC, RAN and referee checks) and trained by program manager. e-mentoring is about building positive relationships between mentors and mentees, to enhance participants well-being and future aspirations.
