Igniting Dreams Together Mentoring Program is the first Islamic school-based mentoring program, initiated in 2011, to meet the specific needs of Muslim secondary school students in Melbourne. We initiated the program to fill a gap in the community that can address the unique concerns that ?young Muslims face within the current climate in Australia. Igniting Dreams Together participated in the Quality Assurance Project with VYMA and is recognised as a quality youth mentoring program.

Training Process of Mentors It is the policy of Igniting Dreams Together that all mentors attend two one-day training sessions, led by knowledgeable mentoring staff, prior to being matched with mentees. The agendas must cover basic program guidelines, safety issues (including mandatory reporting), mentoring techniques and communication along with relationship building skills and duty of care and confidentiality related issues.? Once mentees have attended the orientation and have been allocated to a mentor, mentees, along with their mentors, will attend an additional two-hour in-service training session at least twice per year. These in-service sessions will be offered to each group at least quarterly. It is the responsibility of the program coordinator to plan, develop, and deliver all training sessions with assistance from other mentoring staff and board members. Training evaluation forms will be collected from each training session for the purposes of assessing and improving the content of the training sessions and trainer performance.

Screening Process of Mentors:

Minimum Mentor Screening Procedures:

  • Complete written application
  • Attend all compulsory training sessions
  • Undertake a Working with Children Check or Police check
  • Provide at least one professional reference and one personal reference
  • Documentation of the screening process must be maintained for each applicant and placed in confidential files.
All personal and private information obtained in respect of any person during the screening process must be maintained in accordance with all policies of Igniting Dreams Together and the Privacy Act 1988.
Mentor Position Description:

Mentors are expected to:

  • Support young people in their personal development
  • Strengthen the young person's Islamic character
  • Provide a sense of connectedness that moves young people towards greater personal, career and educational aspirations
  • Provide opportunities and broaden the horizon of young people through interacting with experienced successful young adults
Mentor Minimum Commitment: 1 - attending a mentor training workshop 2 - conducting one mentoring session fortnightly at least 3 - attending two in-service events yearly 4 - attending the end of year closing the matches event
