YMCA Youth Mentoring builds positive, inclusive and productive lifestyles for young people by linking them with a professionally supported mentor and friend. The positive impact of professionally structured mentoring encourages:

  • A Greater sense of acceptance and self-confidence
  • An increased commitment to learning and setting goals
  • A Feeling of being valued, understood and respected

YMCA Youth Mentoring operates two primary models of mentoring. Our community-based and site-based models target young people from 11 to 18 years and include those:

  • isolated from the local community and at risk
  • with low self-esteem and negative attitudes and behaviours
  • in school to work transition
  • talented young people in need of a mentor to develop their skills in a subject area, sport or extracurricular activity
  • those who are culturally and linguistically diverse.

Mentor Training: Yes, training is provided for mentors
Training Process of Mentors Attend an initial orientation training session and additional pre and post match training sessions twice during each year of participation in the program. These training sessions are facilitated by the Youth Mentoring Co-ordinator with resources developed by internal YMCA Mentoring programs and affiliated national and international youth organisations. Personal ongoing support and supervision will be provided to help the match succeed. Mentors are also encouraged to attend optional mentor/mentee group events, mentor support groups, and utilise YMCA facilities
Mentor Screening: Yes, screening is provided for mentors
Screening Process of Mentors:
  • Submit written application National Police Check AND Working with Children
  • Check carried out Personal interview with the Program Co-ordinator
  • Provide three personal references
  • Attend two-hour mentor pre-match training
  • Meet with the young person and their parent / guardian / teacher to determine suitable match
Mentor Position Description:
  • Be of adult age (over 18)
  • Reside with the local program boundaries
  • Be interested in working with young people
  • Be willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures
  • Be willing to complete the application and selection process
  • Be dependable and consistent in meeting the time commitments
  • Attend mentor training sessions and support sessions
  • Be willing to communicate regularly with program staff, communicate activity information, and take constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities
  • Have a suitable criminal history
  • No use of illicit drugs
  • No use of alcohol or controlled substances in an inappropriate manner
Mentor Minimum Commitment:
  • One year with the option of continuing beyond the first year Spend at least four hours per month one-to-one with a mentee
  • Communicate with the mentee weekly
  • Attend an initial orientation training session and additional pre and post match training sessions twice during each year of participation in the program
